Who is Raoul Pal?

Raoul Pal is the CEO and co-founder of Real Vision Group and Global Macro Investor firm. He started his career as a Hedge fund manager, and then he turned out to be an economist, investment strategist, and economic historian.

From the University of Plymouth, Raoul Pal studied Law and Economics and graduated in 1990. After graduation from his first job, he went for the role of Sales Executive at Dow Jones Telerate. For the next year, he switched jobs and became a Senior Executive at James Capel & Co. he joined in 1991. 

In 1995, Raoul Pal joined NatWest Markets as Director and stayed there till 1997. The turning point came when he joined the renowned financial institution, Goldman Sachs. There he was at the designation of European Hedge Fund (Equities and equity derivatives) Sales Head from 1997 to 2001. 

After he managed to be at GLG Partners as Portfolio Manager in 2001, he left and founded his firm, an original, thoughtful, and utterly independent research publication, The Global Macro Investor, in January 2005. 

Since then, Raoul Pal has been CEO of the company, and later on, in 2014, he co-founded Real Vision, the firm in the same way of previous research publication but now in digital and video format. We will see in detail the working of Real Vision.

Raoul Pal is a well known crypto supporter investor and, from time to time, makes statements in its support. He is especially fond of Bitcoin so much, to the extent that today where people predict the flagship currency to reach 100k, in 2014, Raoul Pal bitcoin prediction was to go 1 million. Although can’t say on which basis he made the statement as at that time, Bitcoin was trading at $650 only. 

The actual statement he made in the interview was —

Let’s assume bitcoin is something like gold which is only in a finite amount. To date, only a finite amount has been mined, and the rest is still underground. We somewhat know how long it will take to mine all the gold or all the bitcoins. Now put them in the same kind of equation; we got a million-dollar value of bitcoin. Now you will never hear an analyst say that it will go $1 million, but I don’t mind this; I could be wrong by 90%, and if I would, it’s still worth $100,000.

Raoul Pal’s bitcoin investment started in 2012, and he remains very vocal about his positive approach regarding bitcoin. Although in 2017, when the price of the flagship cryptocurrency skyrocketed, he doubted it and even called it a bubble. 

However, till then, Raoul Pal’s bitcoin investment went up to ten times, and when the prices held, he came to his positive stance for crypto. In 2020, the former hedge fund manager again stated his belief in bitcoin reaching $1 million. 

The same year when the Covid-19 pandemic hit and few big-name investors forecasted about the upcoming global economic crisis after it. Raoul Pal was among those forecasters, and according to that, he also positioned his portfolio to take advantage of that financial market downturn in March. He allocated 50% of his total investment portfolio into Bitcoin, which earlier was 25%.
