MetaMask is among the best crypto wallets and is owned by ConsenSys. On April 14 2023, the company announced that its crypto wallet suffered a data breach which affected nearly 7000 users.

According to the blog post, exploiters targeted a third-party customer service application, not the application. Per the post, the issue was reported in August 2021 and resolved in February 2023.

ConsenSys said that the customer that contacted customer support needed to stay safe as they shared their personal information, and those who did not get them need not worry.

In August 2021, some unidentified hackers accessed the ConsenSys third-party service provider. Similarly, many users contacted customer support during this period and have provided their valuable information may be at risk.

ConsenSys claimed in its blog post that the users connected to customer support may have provided some crucial information like Name, Surname, Postal address, Pincode, Phone Number and Date of Birth.

Similarly, the company claims that customer support only needs a little information to resolve the issue caused to the user. ConsenSys believes it is hard to determine who is at risk and who is not. A company spokesperson revealed that three had faced severe financial losses due to this incident.

While talking to a crypto media outlet, the spokesperson noted, “First, the company performed a task to gather the data and then carried out an initial investigation to determine the criticality of the incident and have implemented mandatory steps to overcome the issue.”

The fundamental question that most users have asked is when the company was aware of this security threat in 2021 and why the issue was resolved a year after it was reported.

The spokesperson added that the company hired a forensic investigator to perform a comprehensive investigation and took steps to resolve the issue caused to the users.

MetaMask has an active user base of more than 21 Million active users and majorly operates in the United States, Ukraine, Turkey, Russia and the United Kingdom. It is important to note that users often get affected when they share their crucial information on any malicious link or fake gateways.

Crypto hacks are common nowadays, and to promote these fraudulent schemes, scammers use Twitter and Instagram. The majority of the time, it is seen that hackers hack companies’ official Twitter and Instagram accounts to lure the user community and target them.
