Many sub communities on Reddit known as subreddits are going private for 48 hours. This is their way to show their protest against the new policy of this social media platform. As per this policy, the use of third party applications is prohibited. The users are not given free access to tools.

Reddit has already announced in April that it is soon going to implement a policy for users interaction with its Data Application Programming Interface (API). The third party apps prohibition leads to rejection by many communities.  The crypto sub community has decided to show its stance by going silent on June 12th to 14th.

Many Sub-Communities Not in Favor of Policy

Many sub communities are not in favor of this policy. Nearly 3,500 sub communities will be offline. Under this, policy charges or fees will be charged on using third party apps to explore the social media network.

For regular interactions and content, the community uses third party solutions. But now, these third party solutions will be regulated. Reddit wants to develop native moderator tools, directly affecting the communities potential to design. This implication is not accepted with open heart from various communities, and it is the main reason for the crypto community going offline.

Reddit, a discussion website, is used by the registered users who submit content to the site such as links, text posts, images, and videos. Millions of users use this platform to discuss many features of the crypto community.

The community groups r/Bitcoin, r/CryptoCurrency, and r/cardano are some prominent communities dedicated discussion groups for Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. They are not liking the move taken by Reddit, and hence, they are participating in the rejection.

Reddit Facing Disapproval for Charging Fees

The company is facing a lot of disapproval for charging for API access. This prohibition leads to havoc among the users, as they suddenly receive messages that they are not part of the community and it’s a private community now.

The users get confused as to why they are thrown out of the community without sufficient reason and they can’t even get access to thousands of posts and comments. Later on, some understood that this is all part of the blackout which is against the upcoming changes.

The paid access to Reddit’s data API has raised many negative reactions. Numerous sub communities may join this prohibition against the charged fees. On the contrary, Steve Huffman supported the decision of social media stating that this is the need for self sustaining business. He also added communities who do not favor the decision can raise their unliking by going private.

Reddit plans to launch its IOS and Android apps to remove the excessive use of third party apps. Besides this ongoing rejection of the policy, it is emerging as high for holding NFT’s. It had 10M NFT holders within a year of launching Reddit NFT’s.
