AMD recently unveiled the details of its AI chip, which many think would set itself as a strong contender in front of Nvidia. In an announcement made on June 13, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) stated MI300X, the company’s flagship and advanced AI-focused graphic processing unit (GPU), will roll out by Q3 2023. By the fourth quarter, the production of the chip will start on a large scale.
According to AMD, the MI300X chip and its CDNA architecture are designed in such a way to facilitate the demand for processing speed and efficiency in large language and advanced models in the AI industry.
The chip model from the California-based company is claimed to have 192 gigabytes (GB) of maximum memory capacity. This gives MI300X an upper hand in handling even the larger AI models. The flagship chip model from Nvidia, H100, for instance, supports a memory capacity of 120 GB at maximum capacity.
Nvidia Holds the Dominance Prior to AMD
Currently, chipmaker giant Nvidia holds the grip over this segment. The company has market dominance capturing more than 80% of the overall market share of artificial intelligence (AI) chips. Though AMD revealed features of its upcoming chip, Nvidia still is the elephant in the room.
The AI tech is in its budding stage, and companies like OpenAI indulged in creating generative AI like ChatGPT. The GPU chips manufactured by the companies facilitate the processing capabilities. They are also employed to handle a huge amount of data along with the operations. With these capabilities to handle the operations involving AI programs like cutting-edge technology, makes them crucial for rapid and efficient processing.
Akin to the integration system of Nvidia and Google, which deploys eight or even more GPUs at once for AI applications, AMD also holds the same capabilities. AMD is said to have infinity architecture technology. It combines eight M1300X accelerators and allocates the accumulated processing power into one system.
AMD Eyes on Burgeoning AI Market
AMD has its name in the field of creating traditional computer processors. Now with the shift in demand from the processors, the company seeks to benefit and step into the AI industry. If it gets among the developers and server manufacturers for its AI chips, AMD could get a chance to stand as an alternative to Nvidia.
AMD CEO, Lisa Su, addressed investors and analysts during a presentation in San Francisco, stating artificial intelligence is part of a significant and strategic long-term growth opportunity for the company. The market of AI accelerators is likely to grow up to $30 Billion this year, showcasing a remarkable growth with an annual rate of 50%. By 2027, it’s likely to reach up to $150 Billion.
