People may not be able to predict what kind of technology they may see in the future, but one thing is always certain, it never fails to impress us. From writing scripts on palm leaves to jotting down stuff on a laptop, we have come a long way. Today, virtual reality (VR) is among the booming innovations across the globe. From consumer electronics company High Tech Computer (HTC) corporation to iPhone maker Apple, everyone is exploring new ways to leverage VR to get the most out of their businesses.

Gaming is Still at The Heart of VR

Becoming a dominating tech isn’t an overnight game. People need to believe in technology first to consider it integrating into daily lives. Children in today’s generation learn more quickly than an average Joe in the 1930s. Give them a smartphone, and they’ll show you how YouTube is skimmed.

While this shows how smart the kids have become, we must not fail to think about how they might use VR devices. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, a not-for-profit professional association, children aged 8 to 12 years spend 4 to 6 hours in front of screens. Parents should take charge today to keep the ill effects in the remote future at bay.

Our routine activities of shopping, socialization, gaming, and more might transpire in virtual worlds. A survey conducted by American-Irish professional service Accenture last year highlights over 30% of people are willing to shop in the metaverse. Lifelike graphics in games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), Death Stranding, The Last of Us II, Red Dead Redemption 2, and more might take the gaming experience to a whole new level in VR.

Why won’t a gamer not fight on the battlefield alongside their favorite character in a military shooter? With technologies like haptic suits, omni-treadmills, and more, gaming will only become more immersive. Socializing in the virtual worlds will become a norm. Metaverse game Fortnite alone witnessed over 242 Million players globally.

However, affordability is a big issue in virtual reality devices. In October 2022, Meta Platforms came up with Meta Quest Pro with a hefty price tag of $1,499. Just a few weeks ago, their rival Apple announced Vision Pro for $3,499. A sort of luxury only blue-blooded can afford for now.

It’s Not All Roses and Rainbows

As technology advances, the data gets bigger alongside it. Digital worlds will require best-in-class technology for high-quality rendering and to process huge amounts of data in real-time. No one would want to meet an average-looking low resolution three dimension avatar of Robert Downey Jr. in the metaverse, but a lifelike avatar? Why not?

We must not rule out the possibility of the psychological effects of wearing VR headgear for long. Overexposure to virtual reality devices can lead to alterations in the human brain. This may deliver ill effects including but not limited to motion sickness, delusions, near-sightedness, and more.

Virtual reality may prove life-altering technology for many, but every rainbow has its share of gray clouds. While considering how it can be used for good, we must also take into account the perils it may bring upon humanity.
