Changing Twitter’s new logo to ‘X’ might bring trouble for the company and Elon Musk, as records state Meta trademarked it years ago. Although this log change created a buzz around the internet community, a legal battle could be hiding near the horizon as Facebook’s parent company per the registered trademarked the logo in 2019.

Meta and Microsoft Own the Trademark ‘X’

According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office records, Meta applied for the trademark on May 25, 2017, and it was officially granted in June 2019. The social media giant wishes to use this logo for social networking. Interestingly, Microsoft also owns the ‘X’ logo and intends to use it for finance or e-commerce. It was trademarked in 2020.

While Meta’s logo appears to be two opposite angles coming together to form an X shape with white and light blue symbols overlapping on a blue background. It is not the case with Twitter’s logo which is dramatically different with a simple black-and-white ‘X’ design.

It can be seen that Twitter’s new logo resembles a Unicode character, also known as a “mathematical double-struck capital X.” People from the gaming community might find a close resemblance to it as it is similar to Microsoft’s gaming console, the Xbox.

Verge writer and former editor for Neowin, Tom Warren, slashed the new Twitter logo, which is now ‘X,’ and pointed out that the new logo is simply a version of the letter X. This version of the logo is a glyph found in Special Alphabet 4 font.

He hinted that Elon Musk’s team did not work hard on the design. Moreover, he also pointed out the similarities with the logo of the Xbox Series gaming console.

Will the Hyped Cage Fight Between Muck and Zuck be Real?

Since Meta launched Threads, a supposed Twitter killer social media app, the internet community has been eager to see a cage fight between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. With the recent revelation that Meta already had the trademark for the ‘X’ logo, the bout just got interesting.

Legal analysts and trail lawyer Kelly Hyman says the trademark is a symbol or a design owned by the company. Moreover, it must be unique in every sense and distinctive from others. There are visible differences between the competitors’ logos. So, the case might not stand.

Moreover, legal experts also add that Meta might sue Twitter over its new logo and call it trademark infringement. Microsoft also holds the trademark for that particular logo to join the ring. It would be an exciting fight if both Microsoft and Meta joined hands and sued the social media giant together for copying their logo.

The premise of watching the three tech giants throwing legal punches at each other sounds enthralling. Ultimately, it will be up to the judge and honorable jury to decide the ultimate winner based on evidence and facts. At press time, neither Meta nor Microsoft have pressed legal charges in the matter.

Bye-Bye Larry the Bird and Hello ‘X’

Larry the Bird, aka the old logo, has been iconic and synonymous with the social media giant now owned by Elon Musk. On July 23, 2023, the media platform’s website officially changed the symbol. Though the change was made official recently, it has been in the mix since April 2023, when a court filing confirmed that Twitter Inc. is now X Corp. However, the revelation date of the change was not announced then.
