Ethereum is a blockchain platform that allows developers to create and deploy smart contracts, which are self-executing contracts with the terms of the agreement directly written into code. Ether (ETH) is the native cryptocurrency of the Ethereum blockchain and is used as a means of payment for transactions and as an incentive for miners who validate and add new blocks to the blockchain.

Ethereum’s programmability and versatility have made it a popular choice for various applications beyond simple transactions. It has become a foundational technology for a wide range of decentralized applications (dApps) and services, including non-fungible tokens (NFTs), gaming, decentralized finance (DeFi), and various other blockchain-based applications.

This blockchain’s initial founding members included Vitalik Buterin, Mihal Alisie, Anthony Di Lorio, Amir Chetrit, Charles Hoskinson, Gavin Woods, Jeffrey Wilcke, and Joseph Lubin.

Initial Founding Members of Ethereum

The seed idea of Ethereum came to the mind of Vitalik Buterin in 2013. Later on, this germinated into a plant with the help of eight co-founders.

Vitalik Buterin

Vitalik Buterin is actively working on Ethereum. Ethereum was conceived in 2013 by this programmer. The development work began in 2014 and the network went live on July 30, 2015. He has taken a backseat to work on Ethereum 2.0 which is the next phase o thef blockchain platform which enables it to scale.

Mihai Alisie

Mihai Alisie is a graduate in Cybernetics economics informatics and statics. He created the first ever publication on Bitcoin “The Bitcoin Magazine” with Vitalik Buterin in 2011. He served as chief editor of the magazine until late 2013. Subsequently, he connected with Buterin in co-founding the Ethereum project. He played a crucial role in the Ethereum foundation, serving as Vice President until 2015. However, he is no longer actively involved with Ethereum and is currently focusing on his project in the field of social networking.

Jeffrey Wilcke

Jeffrey Wilcke is indeed a computer programmer who played a significant role in the early days of Ethereum. He co-founded Ethereum in 2014 and was instrumental in the development of the software implementation known as Go Ethereum (Geth). Geth is one of the major Ethereum clients used to interact with the Ethereum blockchain. After his involvement with Ethereum, Jeffrey Wilcke shifted his focus to game development and founded a game development studio.

Joseph Lubin

Joseph Lubin is the most experienced among all the co-founders of Ethereum. He joined as Chief Operating Officer of Ethereum Switzerland GmbH in 2014. He was also entangled with the creation of the Ethereum foundation. He founded ConsenSys in 2015, which develops software based on Ethereum blockchain.

Gavin Wood

Gavin Wood is a British computer programmer. He offered to write an application for Ethereum in c++.  He published the yellow paper of Ethereum which is the technological description of white paper released by Vitalik. He later proposed Solidity. Now he is focused on Web3 and the blockchain product Polkadot.

Charles Hoskinson

Charles Hoskinson wanted to become a mathematician. Anthony Di Lorio introduced him to Vitalik Buterin. He has played a major role in establishing the Swiss foundation. He was in favor of Ethereum as a non-profitable corporation and his stand on this led him out of it. He then launched “Cardano”, which is the sixth largest cryptocurrency by market cap.

Anthony Di Lorio

Anthony Di Iorio comes from a well-established family background. In 2012, he organized a Bitcoin meetup where he had the opportunity to meet Vitalik Buterin. Impressed by Anthony’s vision and expertise, Vitalik asked him to become one of the co-founders of Ethereum. Anthony played a crucial role in the early development of Ethereum before venturing into other opportunities.

After his stint at Ethereum, Anthony briefly served as the Chief Digital Officer of the Toronto Stock Exchange. However, his passion for blockchain technology led him to establish Decentral, the developer of the popular Jaxx digital wallet in 2018.

As an entrepreneur with a diverse range of interests, Anthony later shifted his focus to the health and wellness space. Throughout his career, he has been involved in the launch of more than 10 companies and has made significant investments in various industries, including the blockchain sector.

Amir Chetrit

Amir Chetrit is a U.S. Israeli national. He met with Vitalik Buterin in a bitcoin business conference in Amsterdam in September 2013. Due to a lack of input, he came under fire by other co-founders of Ethereum. He agreed to step down and later supported many other blockchains but remained low profile.

Summary

Ethereum had eight co-founders who played crucial roles in the early development of the platform. While some of them have moved on to work on other projects and ventures, Vitalik Buterin remains deeply involved in the Ethereum ecosystem.

As one of the key co-founders, Vitalik Buterin has been actively leading Ethereum’s development since its inception. He is known for his visionary ideas and contributions to the blockchain space. Vitalik is particularly focused on addressing Ethereum’s scalability issues and improving its security through layering solutions.
