The Internet Computer (ICP) project is working on blockchain solutions that will adhere to the regulatory requirements, including the GDPR and other frameworks. It is the launch of a European subnet compliant with EU regulations.

It will provide general data protection as per the GDPR rules for decentralized applications. Developers will get a set of tools through it, which they can use to release dApps on the European market to protect financial and personal data.

Dominic Williams, the founder and chief scientist of DFINITY stated:

“Internet Computer allows for the decentralization of the entire stack. The NNS DAO that controls the network has created an internal subnet that exclusively combines nodes located in Europe, allowing web3 developers to create GDPR-compliant online services and applications. Web3 developers can now create innovative and compliant decentralized experiences for the benefit of millions of users in the EU and beyond.”

How Does the GDPR-Compliant Blockchain Work?

The ICP subnets work as a set of nodes that perform the same calculations, store the same data, and are set in the same set. However, the European subnet is geographically delimited as all the nodes of the subnet are located within the EU.

In traditional blockchains, the data is visible to everyone, whereas ICP allows developers to decide whether to make data public or private. Even the private data is encrypted and accessible only to authorized parties.

ICP also supports data mutability, which means the authorized parties can change or delete data.

Features of GDPR Complaint Blockchain

  • The data is not public: The data is not visible to everyone. Even private data is encrypted and can only be accessed by authorized parties.
  • Data is Immutable: Amendment of data is possible, it can be changed or deleted.
  • Dapps have full data and access control: The internet computer permits the developers to implement their own data protection and privacy policies.
  • Governed by NNS: The Internet Computer is governed by a Network Nervous System (NNS) which is a decentralized algorithmic authority. That keeps an eye on the operations and development of the network or blockchain. It is responsible for providing networks to the new node providers and also assigning the subnets to them.

Developing GDPR Compliant dApps is Challenging

GDPR is the European Union’s Regulation on data protection. It came into effect in 2016 and has been operational since 2018. It is a strict regulation for those who manage third-party data. As per this regulation, the legal treatment of the data in EU countries became different.

The dApps do not collect the personal data of users. However, when classic services or functionalities require identity recognition or the provision of personal data such as email addresses, dApps perform them.

The solution proposed by DFINITY targets those developers who want to move away from the anonymous DeFi environment and bring to the market dApps that facilitate more traditional and perhaps centralized services.

Summary

The DFINITY Foundation, a Swiss research and development organization, announced the launch of GDPR-compliant infrastructure for dApps. With this new infrastructure, the developers will be facilitated with tools that can be utilized for the release of dApps in the European Market that protect the data under regulatory practices.
