After so many speculations about sales of Apple Vision Pro headsets, renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has put forth the initial numbers. According to his latest analysis, the iPhone bearer has sold between 160,000 to 180,000 units during pre-orders. He also said that the company is likely to schedule the product for a global launch in February 2024.

Almost Half The Target For the Year Has Been Met

He wrote in his analysis that, “based on pre-order inventory and shipping time, I estimated that Apple sold 160,000 to 180,000 Vision Pro units during the first pre-order weekend.” In his previous analysis, he had predicted that “Vision Pro shipments in 2024 will be at most 400,000–600,000 units.”

Moreover, the numbers are nearly three times more than Ming-Chi Kuo estimated in his previous analysis. He speculated that Apple may ship around 80,000 units on its initial launch in February. The company’s rivals, Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook), have already launched their product, Quest 3, as a part of this competition in October 2023.

There’s some optimism regarding the sales in the analysis. According to Kuo, “Achieving a shipment volume of 500,000 units for Vision Pro this year should not be challenging. However, because demand tapers off quickly after the initial sold-out, it’s critical to closely monitor demand in other markets and application updates to assess changes in demand.”

“Apple has a massive user base of over 1.2 billion active users. As long as about 0.007% of users are willing to buy after pre-ordering, Vision Pro can sell out after opening for pre-order. So, right now, Vision Pro is still a very niche product,” he further added.

Before it was initially revealed during the WorldWide Developer Conference 2023 (WWDC23), many believed the product would revolutionize the metaverse. However, Apple surprised the metaverse enthusiasts as the term ‘metaverse’ was not even used during the entire event.

They said the product will focus on spatial computing. The concept is defined as a human computer interaction which the user perceives, through a head mounted display (HMD), as it is happening in their world. Usually, the metaverse is deemed as a simulated virtual world, however with the advent of technologies like mixed reality (MR) the concept has moved beyond its basic definition.

HMDs are still a far cry from going mainstream majorly due to their hefty prices. Apple has set the price for Vision Pro at $3,500 initially. This is also a reason for limited manufacturing of the product. Similarly, Magic Leap 3, a HMD by Magic Leap, will be sold for $3,300.

Meta’s Quest 3 is relatively cheaper with a price tag of $500 only. However, the mixed reality headset is unlikely to match the features Apple and Magic Leap may provide. Reports show that Meta Platforms has sold 69,000 devices by November 2023.
