Stablecoin News: Tether CEO Confirms USDT is Coming to Bitcoin

Key Insights:

  • Stablecoin news highlights Tether’s planned USDT expansion on the Bitcoin Network.
  • Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino reiterated support for the Bitcoin-based USDT.
  • RGB and Lightning infrastructure now support Tether’s broader Bitcoin strategy.

The latest stablecoin news highlights Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino’s renewed focus on USDT’s planned return to Bitcoin. On Sept. 24, Ardoino wrote on X that “USDT on Bitcoin” was coming home. His comment revived Tether’s broader push to place its dollar stablecoin directly across Bitcoin infrastructure.

The Bitcoin return also carries historical context for Tether. USDT originally operated through the Omni Layer, which used Bitcoin for settlement.

Tether stopped minting USDT on Omni in August 2023 as usage shifted elsewhere. At that time, the company explicitly pointed to RGB as a future Bitcoin-based route.

That history separates the current plan from a first-time Bitcoin launch. Tether is effectively rebuilding Bitcoin support through newer infrastructure designed for payments and asset issuance.

The statement mattered today because Tether had spent nearly two years building multiple Bitcoin-linked routes for USDT. Those efforts cover Bitcoin’s base layer, Lightning Network payments, and the RGB asset protocol. The latest comment suggested those separate tracks remain active rather than abandoned.

Stablecoin News Focus Returns to Tether’s Bitcoin Strategy

Ardoino’s post did not announce a launch date or new technical specification. However, it reinforced commitments Tether had already disclosed through official announcements.

Tether first announced a Bitcoin and Lightning integration in January 2025. The company said USDT would use Lightning Labs’ Taproot Assets protocol for on-chain and Lightning transactions.

That plan aimed to combine Bitcoin settlement with faster payments over Lightning. Tether said the integration would support remittances, payments, and other dollar-denominated transactions.

Lightning Labs separately described Taproot Assets as a protocol for issuing assets on Bitcoin. Its documentation said that those assets can move through Lightning channels, while Bitcoin provides the underlying routing liquidity.

Stablecoin News Builds Around RGB and Lightning Infrastructure

Tether expanded that strategy in August 2025 by announcing plans to launch USDT through RGB. RGB uses client-side validation while anchoring transaction commitments to Bitcoin.

Tether said RGB would let users hold and transfer USDT alongside Bitcoin. The company also cited privacy, scalability, and lighter on-chain data requirements as design goals.

Development continued through 2026. RGB Protocol said in August that Tether’s Wallet Development Kit gained RGB Lightning support.

Utexo built the module and connected RGB assets with Lightning functionality inside Tether’s wallet development framework. RGB described the module as beta software maintained by Utexo.

Utexo now markets infrastructure for moving USDT across Bitcoin using RGB and Lightning. Its website lists settlement, swaps, bridging, and wallet integrations among supported use cases.

Product Mechanics Extend Beyond a Single Bitcoin Rail

Tether’s Bitcoin strategy now involves several technical paths rather than one implementation. Taproot Assets provides one framework for issuing and transferring assets through Bitcoin and Lightning.

RGB offers another route using client-side validation and Bitcoin commitments. Tether has publicly supported both systems while expanding its wallet software and infrastructure investments.

That distinction matters because Ardoino’s latest post did not identify which implementation would launch first. It also did not state whether every planned Bitcoin-based USDT route would share one rollout schedule.

The company has also backed other Bitcoin-focused infrastructure. Tether invested in Ark Labs in March 2026 to support programmable Bitcoin transaction infrastructure.

These investments suggest Tether is pursuing broader Bitcoin payment infrastructure alongside its direct USDT issuance plans. They do not establish a confirmed commercial launch date.

USDT on Bitcoin Rollout Gains Infrastructure Support

The market scale around USDT makes the rollout relevant beyond Bitcoin development circles. CoinMarketCap listed USDT’s market capitalization near $183.5 billion on Sept. 24.

That placed Tether’s token as the third-largest cryptocurrency by market value. Its size means new settlement rails could affect exchange, wallet, and payment infrastructure.

Recent RGB development has moved closer to user-facing distribution. RGB Protocol said UniSat joined the USDT-on-Bitcoin rollout as a wallet launch partner in September.

Utexo also presents itself as an infrastructure provider for Bitcoin-native USDT settlement. Its platform targets exchanges, payment providers, custodians, and retail wallets.

Still, Ardoino’s Sept. 24 statement stopped short of naming a release date. Tether also had not published a same-day product launch notice.

The next verifiable milestone will be a formal Tether rollout announcement or supported wallet release. Until then, Ardoino’s post confirms direction, not general availability.
