Key Insights:
- Wallets linked to the US Government moved $470M in BTC, WBTC, and USDT to likely Coinbase Prime addresses.
- The assets were seized from the Bitfinex hacker and Alameda Research.
- The transfer does not confirm a sale, leaving the final disposition of the funds unclear.
The US Government moved around $470 million in BTC, WBTC, and USDT on October 7, according to blockchain intelligence platform Arkham.
The amounts were transferred to addresses likely linked to Coinbase Prime, marking another tranche of crypto moved to institutional pockets but with no confirmation of sales.
However, what makes this particular instance noteworthy is the origin of the amounts. According to Arkham, the amounts had been seized from the Bitfinex hacker and were also linked to Alameda Research.
Why the US Government Transfer Matters?
While the value involved has already raised eyebrows among observers of the US crypto space, the fact that the blockchain shows movement, rather than a closed deal, is equally significant.
In its most recent post on X, Arkham noted that these particular amounts had been transferred to addresses likely belonging to Coinbase Prime deposit addresses.
This, in turn, means that any number of events could have taken place following the transfer, ranging from completion of a sale to deposit and warehousing or even utilization in some other manner.
In effect, what happened on the blockchain only shows movement. It does not establish or confirm any particular intention on the part of the involved wallets.
It is worth noting that in some prior cases, the US Government has used Coinbase Prime for similar transactions.
In early July, around $288 million in Bitcoin and Ether were transferred to Coinbase Prime, and news outlets at the time noted that no sale had been made, only a deposit. To date, Arkham has also noted that Coinbase Prime has been a recipient of government-linked funds.
In effect, the latest transfer can be seen in the broader context of several large-value government-linked movements that have taken place in the last few months.
Bitcoin Is Only Part of the Transfer
The confirmed Bitcoin movement is only part of the transaction. Alongside BTC, the US Government also transferred WBTC and USDT. BTC and WBTC represent Bitcoin in different forms, while USDT is a dollar-pegged stablecoin.
Although WBTC is essentially a token wrapped around BTC, in practice it is a fungible token and therefore differs from the native coin in both use cases and risk factors.

Essentially, the involvement of these two additional cryptos adds to the body of information on government-held crypto that is publicly known, but only up to a point.
A deposit can happen before a sale, but it can also reflect a custody transfer or internal asset management. A deposit can occur either before a sale or it can represent a transfer of custody or internal asset management.
Therefore, labeling the $470M movement described as a sale would go beyond what is supported by the on-chain data. The important information for the Bitcoin investor is that the assets have moved, but their final destination and disposition are not known.
The Earlier $103M Move by US Government Adds Another Layer
As The Coin Republic reported on October 7, wallets linked to it had moved 833.599 BTC worth about $71.56 million to Coinbase Prime and 40,285 BNB worth about $31.63 million to a fresh wallet, for a combined value of $103.19 million.
However, the list of assets involved in that particular transfer was apparently different, and so were the origins traced by Arkham.
While the $470 million sum moved on October 7 appears to come from the Bitfinex hacker, the previous one had been linked to Alameda Research.
The $103 million transfer from government-linked addresses one day earlier is notable, but it would be unwise to draw a specific connection between the two transactions. What can be confirmed is that both occurred and reflect a broader movement of government-linked crypto funds.
