Vitalik Buterin Warns AI Could Break Crypto Security Faster Than Expected

Key Insights:

  • Vitalik Buterin warns AI advances could weaken crypto security sooner than expected.
  • Justin Drake urges careful moves to fresh addresses amid potential AI crypto risks.
  • Buterin favors hash-based defenses while warning against rushed wallet migrations.

Vitalik Buterin warned that artificial intelligence could weaken crypto security faster than expected, while cautioning holders against rushed wallet migrations.

His comments followed Ethereum researcher Justin Drake’s call for controlled transfers to fresh addresses. Both discussed precautions against possible cryptographic breakthroughs, but Buterin emphasized the financial risks of moving funds carelessly.

Vitalik Buterin said AI-driven mathematical progress could threaten elliptic curves and lattice-based cryptography, extending concerns beyond quantum computing.

Buterin challenged the assumptions that a lattice would remain secure even if the elliptic curves failed. His warning also covered encryption systems supporting secure messaging, website access, and privacy services.

Vitalik Buterin Questions Lattice Security

Buterin argued that future mathematical discoveries could reduce the security of lattice-based systems within two years.

He identified ML-DSA and fully homomorphic encryption among the areas requiring closer attention. However, he presented that timeline as a possible scenario, rather than an established outcome.

To address his concern, Buterin pointed out historical trends in algorithms used to factor numbers. Those advances reduced the difficulty of factoring and increased the key sizes necessary for RSA security.

He suggested AI could uncover comparable shortcuts in mathematical structures underlying elliptic curves and lattices. Against that backdrop, Buterin favored hash-based cryptography wherever developers could use it for signatures and proofs.

He said Ethereum’s lean roadmap had pursued that direction for the past year. The approach excludes lattice-based signatures and commitments, instead using hash-based signatures such as WOTS and SPHINCS.

Drake Calls for Controlled Wallet Moves

Meanwhile, Drake urged the blockchain industry to begin calmly preparing for what he called “bunker mode.” His proposal prioritizes large, sophisticated holders moving assets into addresses that have never signed transactions. Those addresses keep public keys hidden behind hashes, forming the basis of his proposed precaution.

Drake also recommended moving the remaining funds to a new address after signing a transaction. He said holders could possibly generate that address from the same seed phrase. However, he warned that hurried transfers could cause more damage than the risks they sought to address.

His AI crypto warning included a worst-case scenario in which ECDSA could fail within months before a quantum breakthrough. He defined failure as the rapid recovery of a private key using available hardware, such as a large GPU cluster. That scenario represented his assessment, rather than evidence of an existing break.

Migration Risks Shape Buterin’s Response

Vitalik Buterin took a more cautious position on immediate transfers, saying holders should not scramble to change wallets. He supported unused addresses when moving funds involved little difficulty. However, he said botched migrations had cost him more money than all hacks combined.

Beyond individual wallets, he favored off-chain confirmations for multisignature wallets because they avoid publicly exposing signers’ signatures. He argued this could preserve limited protection if AI unexpectedly defeated ECDSA. He also urged privacy protocols to send encrypted notes off-chain through third parties, instead of recording them onchain.

Public-key encryption presents a harder challenge, according to Buterin, because hashes alone cannot provide the required functionality.

Such systems need a mathematical structure, which he believes AI could continue to exploit. For longer-term protection, he strongly recommended larger keys, describing a tenfold increase as a plausible precaution.

That distinction shaped his preference for hash-based systems wherever practical alternatives already exist. For lattice-based applications, he urged greater caution over security parameters. Drake likewise favored hash-based cryptography and said he would push to accelerate Ethereum’s defensive roadmap.
