Crypto News: Deutsche Bank to Launch Crypto Custody in Germany Soon

Key Insights:

  • In today’s crypto news, custody is expected to start in Germany within weeks, pending regulatory and technical readiness.
  • According to crypto news today, Bitcoin and Ether lead the product page lists, with USDC, EURC, and EURAU among supported tokens.
  • Stablecoin conversions and Asian expansion are planned for later phases, with expansion expected in 2027.

The latest crypto news confirms that Deutsche Bank is weeks away from launching crypto custody in Germany for selected institutional and corporate clients. Gerald Podobnik, the bank’s corporate bank co-head, told Reuters the service will begin with major cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ether. Stablecoin-related services are planned for a later phase.

Deutsche Bank’s September product material lists five tokens. Meanwhile, its public page says availability depends on regulatory completion and technical readiness.

That gap separates a supported asset from a customer-ready account or live conversion service. The bank has not announced a go-live date or named its first client.

Crypto News: Deutsche Bank Crypto Custody Remains Subject to Launch Conditions

According to this crypto news on October 16, the launch was weeks away and would start in Germany. Its September 16 release framed the product as digital asset custody for institutional and corporate clients, targeting first European clients in 2026, subject to regulatory timing.

Its product page still says service availability requires regulatory completion and technical readiness. The reported timetable therefore describes management’s expectation, while public terms preserve conditions.

A launch confirmation should provide more than just a website page or an asset list. Useful signals would include a live client agreement, completed onboarding, a first deposit, or transfers processed under the service.

Deutsche Bank says eligible corporate and institutional clients will face due diligence and risk criteria. This crypto custody service is not a retail wallet for ordinary account holders.

Crypto Custody Token Listings Do Not Confirm Conversion Services

The bank’s September announcement named Bitcoin, Ether, USDC, EURC and EURAU among the selected assets planned for custody. Its current page shows the same five names in a supported-token list.

Reuters says the phased rollout begins with major cryptocurrencies, then adds services that help clients move money into and out of mainstream stablecoins. That suggests Deutsche Bank may hold listed stablecoins before offering conversion services; its public materials give no date for those transactions.

Per crypto news, custody means controlling clients’ wallets and private keys, while transfers allow clients to send assets to third parties. Neither function necessarily includes exchanging bank deposits for tokens or redeeming tokens into euros.

The bank’s product page lists custody and transfer services as initial capabilities. It does not list fiat conversion.

Clients will need to confirm which tokens they can deposit, which transfers are enabled, when stablecoin conversions begin, and whether fiat redemption is available. The list of supported assets answers only part of that question. It also does not confirm that each named token has cleared onboarding for every client or transaction type.

MiCA Rules Shape Deutsche Bank Crypto Custody Operations

MiCA sets specific obligations for custody services in the European Union. Also, a highlight of this crypto news is Article 75, which requires a written agreement with each client and a custody policy made available to clients.

Providers must maintain a register of client positions and safeguard the assets or access methods they hold. These duties make documentation, records, and operational controls part of crypto custody, alongside private-key security.

Deutsche Bank’s materials describe hardware security modules, warm and cold storage, multi-person approvals, and segregation of client assets. Its product page lists Germany as the home market, with cross-border European servicing subject to applicable rules. The bank says the service remains contingent on regulatory completion and technical readiness.

After the German launch, Deutsche Bank plans to expand into Asian financial centers in 2027. Podobnik linked the digital asset strategy to the bank’s target of 8% compound annual growth in corporate banking by 2028. The bank also plans tokenized deposits and support for clients issuing blockchain-based securities, including digital bonds.
