Zcash Crypto Jumps 12% as NU7 Upgrade Nears: Can ZEC Hit $1,300?

Key Insights

  • Zcash crypto soared roughly 12% as developers advanced the NU7 activation proposal.
  • The proposed Nov. 5 upgrade targets 25-second blocks and revises transaction-fee distribution.
  • ZEC approached $1,300 resistance, although hourly indicators showed weakening momentum.

Zcash crypto climbed around 12% on Oct. 21 as developers advanced the network’s NU7 upgrade. The rally pushed ZEC toward $1,300, but deployment specifications still lacked the selected activation height.

CoinGlass recorded ZEC near $1,289, with about $2.88 billion in futures open interest. That positioning reflected substantial speculative exposure, but did not establish that the upgrade caused buying.

Zcash Crypto Gains as Developers Propose NU7 Activation Height

Zcash developer Sean Bowe submitted a GitHub proposal on Oct. 20, targeting block 3,543,405. He linked the proposed height to an agreement among Zcash Improvement Proposal editors. The Zcash price rally accompanied that milestone, not activation.

Developers ValarDragon and str4d approved the proposal, but GitHub still listed it as open on Oct. 21. Consequently, the official deployment specification continued to display the mainnet activation height as pending.

The team targeted approximately Nov. 5, according to Bowe’s community forum announcement. That date remains an estimate based on block production, rather than an unconditional rollout commitment.

CoinGlass data showed the Zcash price rising roughly 12% across 24 hours. However, the public market figures alone could not separate upgrade-related demand from broader speculative trading.

NU7 Targets Faster Blocks While Preserving ZEC Issuance

Zcash Improvement Proposal 218 outlined a reduction in target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. That adjustment would triple expected block frequency, although individual confirmation times would still vary.

Under the proposal, three block intervals would total about 75 seconds instead of 225 seconds. Shorter intervals could reduce waiting times for deposits and payments without guaranteeing instant finality.

Developers also proposed smaller block subsidies to preserve approximate daily issuance despite faster block production. The Zcash price reaction therefore should not imply that the protocol plans to triple coin issuance.

Zcash Improvement Proposal 235 outlined another adjustment to miner compensation. The Network Sustainability Mechanism would temporarily remove 60% of each block’s aggregate transaction fees from circulation.

Miners would retain the remaining fees, while developers planned subsequent reissuance through future block subsidies. Zcash Improvement Proposal 237 preserved the four-year halving structure and the 21-million-ZEC supply cap.

Developer Sean Bowe previously identified February 2031 as the approximate starting point for that reissuance. For ZEC price traders, that distinction matters: fee removal is temporary rather than a permanent token burn.

Sprout Closure Creates a Deadline for Legacy Holders

NU7 would also prohibit version 4 transactions, which support transfers from Zcash’s original Sprout shielded pool. Zcash Improvement Proposal 2003 established that newer transaction formats cannot spend those legacy balances.

The Zcash price rally does not remove Sprout holders’ deadline: their funds become unspendable after activation. That proposal leaves open a theoretical future recovery mechanism, but guarantees no such remedy.

The Zcash upgrade also introduces operational responsibilities for node operators and transaction services. The deployment draft warned that outdated software could continue following incompatible pre-upgrade consensus rules.

Network operators would therefore have to adopt compatible software before the selected activation height. These operational dependencies complicate rollout because an agreed block target cannot complete deployment.

Zcash Price Faces $1,300 Resistance as Momentum Slows

The supplied Binance TradingView chart showed Zcash price near $1,271 at 09:46 UTC on Oct. 21. ZEC price recovered sharply from the $1,050 area earlier in the displayed period.

The one-hour Relative Strength Index registered 65.85, indicating firm momentum below the conventional 70 threshold. However, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence histogram stood at negative 1.59, suggesting momentum had cooled.

Initial resistance sits around $1,275, followed by the psychologically prominent $1,300 region. A sustained hourly breakout above $1,300 could expose $1,325 and $1,350 on the chart.

Conversely, a failure near that region could push the Zcash price back toward $1,250 or $1,225. A deeper retreat would shift attention toward $1,200, where earlier trading established another reference area.

Zcash Crypto Price Outlook Hinges on Upgrade Execution

CoinGlass reported roughly $7.45 billion in ZEC futures volume against $578 million in spot volume. The Zcash price advance coincided with higher futures turnover, without establishing whether traders favored longs or shorts.

Analyst Elja cautioned on X that one news-driven advance did not establish a broader reversal. That assessment remained an opinion; price action and derivatives positioning offer a firmer basis for monitoring risk.

The ZEC price faces two tests: holding support and confirming deployment through official software releases. Until those events occur, the Zcash price rally remains vulnerable to technical selling and execution delays.
