Zcash Crypto Faces $1,200 Test as Founder Targets 8% Funding

Key Insights:

  • Zcash crypto faced fresh governance scrutiny after Sean Bowe proposed ending the 8% Community Grants funding stream.
  • Bowe cited over $125 million in grant funding, arguing that existing resources could support future commitments.
  • ZEC price traded near $1,215, with $1,188 support and $1,300 resistance defining its immediate trading range.

Zcash crypto faced renewed governance scrutiny on Oct. 27 after co-founder Sean Bowe proposed ending automatic Community Grants funding. His proposal targeted the program’s 8% block subsidy allocation, raising questions about future development financing.

The proposal emerged as ZEC price consolidated near $1,215 following its recent market correction. Meanwhile, Grayscale Research defended Zcash’s development funding model ahead of the network’s tenth anniversary.

Zcash Crypto Funding Faces Overhaul as Bowe Questions $125M Reserves

Sean Bowe proposed terminating the Zcash Community Grants (ZCG) funding stream in an Oct. 27 X post. The proposal would redirect its 8% block subsidy allocation toward the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM).

Bowe argued that the grants program already controlled substantial financial resources. He estimated that ZCG had over $125 million in funding, with additional allocations still expected.

“It’s time to turn off the ZCG funding stream,” Bowe wrote.

The proposal challenged the continued accumulation of grants funding under the existing framework. However, it did not establish an immediate termination date or confirm a completed protocol amendment.

Zcash crypto currently follows a funding structure that allocates 20% of block subsidies toward ecosystem development. Zcash Improvement Proposal (ZIP) 1016 specifies an 8% allocation for community grants.

The same framework assigns another 12% to a coinholder-controlled development fund. Consequently, Bowe’s proposal targets the community grants allocation rather than the entire development budget.

Under the proposed arrangement, the redirected subsidy would enter the Network Sustainability Mechanism rather than fund additional grants. This would alter the distribution of future block rewards without automatically eliminating existing commitments.

The proposal also raised questions about the program’s financial requirements. However, Bowe’s $125 million estimate requires independent reconciliation against treasury holdings, outstanding obligations, and expenditure records.

Meanwhile, Grayscale Research examined Zcash’s funding model in an Oct. 26 report. Research head Zach Pandl credited sustained development financing with supporting the network’s technological progress.

Pandl highlighted Zcash’s evolution through successive privacy protocols, from Sprout and Sapling to Orchard. The report also discussed Ironwood, a planned upgrade addressing quantum recoverability and supply integrity.

Grayscale argued that protocol-level funding had supported research through periods of weaker market performance. Its assessment offered a different perspective on Zcash crypto development financing.

However, Grayscale’s assessment did not directly address Bowe’s proposed redistribution of community grants. The debate therefore centers on future allocation priorities rather than eliminating development funding altogether.

Zcash Crypto Price Faces $1,188 Support as Bulls Target $1,300

TradingView’s ZEC/USD daily price chart showed Zcash trading near $1,215 on Oct. 27. The token declined 1.29% during the chart’s reporting session, reflecting continued short-term selling pressure.

Price action followed a broader correction from September highs above $1,600. The retreat subsequently established lower highs, although buyers defended the ascending support structure.

ZEC price hovered near the $1,188 support level, identified on the chart as S3. This area also approached the upper boundary of the ascending price channel.

A decisive daily close below $1,188 could expose the next support region near $1,128. Further selling pressure would bring the $1,049 channel level into focus.

The chart also identified deeper support near $975 and $940. These levels represent potential downside reference points rather than confirmed price targets.

Meanwhile, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) stood at 48.50, slightly below the neutral 50 threshold. Its signal average registered 46.68, indicating modest momentum improvement despite prevailing uncertainty.

The indicator suggested that bearish momentum had weakened compared with earlier October sessions. However, RSI remained below 50, leaving sustained bullish momentum unconfirmed.

For Zcash crypto buyers, an initial recovery above $1,240 would strengthen the near-term outlook. A subsequent breakout above $1,300 could open another test of the $1,350–$1,400 resistance region.

Conversely, repeated failures below $1,300 would maintain pressure on the existing support structure. The $1,188 level therefore remains the immediate reference for downside risk.

The funding proposal adds governance uncertainty while traders assess ZEC’s technical position. However, available evidence does not establish a direct relationship between Bowe’s announcement and short-term price movements.
