A few weeks ago, South Korean had launched a digital driver’s license service on PASS. PASS is an identity authentication application that is used by millions of users for financial transactions. The rollout of this new service is first of its kind because this, for the very first time, a digital version of official identification or authentication, will be legally used and accepted throughout the country.

This new service is mainly built by the Korean National Police Agency and the Road Traffic Authority, along with collaboration with South Korea’s three mobile carriers, namely, SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus.

Korean Users Will Need To Download The PASS Authentication Application

The concerned users will need to download the PASS mentioned above mobile application and register with their username and then use fingerprints and facial recognition for various authentications. Then the users need to upload their existing physical licenses to claim an electronic driving license.

The entire system said to be secured by Blockchain technology. As mentioned above, users need to verify their identification, which would be done by an encryption process—the authentication service backed by the Korean National Policy Service driver’s license system built with Blockchain technology. The QR codes associated with the verification procedures refreshed thoroughly and come with floating animation layers. This will help in preventing thefts and scams.

Service Intends To Eliminate Thefts And Illegal Use Of Licences

The commissioner-general of the Korean National Police Agency, Min Gap-ryong, said that the Korean National Police Agency would ensure its full efforts along with the three Mobile Service Providers to increase the widespread adoption of this newly introduced service. He further said that the service aims at reducing theft risks and illegal use of driving licenses.

The vice president and head of the blockchain/authentication office at SK Telecom,  Oh Se-hyeon, said that they were pleased to launch the Digital License Service. He also added that they would work closely with companies promoting non-face to face services during this COVID -19 pandemic.
