The topic of a revived scam operation is trending on Twitter. Since more and more users are attempting to customize their MetaMask wallets, scammers posing as MetaMask support are attempting to lure bitcoin owners.
Between October and November 2022, a number of tweets indicating the existence of a protracted fraud campaign started appearing on Twitter. Users of cryptocurrencies are encouraged to email newly created accounts with any problems they are having with their MetaMask wallets.
Addresses that claim to assist with MetaMask transaction amendment, fund recovery, and other related tasks are being advertised by impersonating bots. All advertised addresses are maintained on a popular, free email service that is unconnected to the largest Ethereum (ETH) wallet.
In reality, no reliable bitcoin service would ever contact its customers using a free email account. MetaMask also emphasized that their cops would never contact users beforehand.
As a result, all announcements from these accounts have been verified to be blatant scams clearly and should be disregarded or reported to the administration of the mail service or social media.
Since MetaMask continues to be the most popular on-chain wallet available for Ethereum (ETH) and all EVM blockchains, scammers frequently target their users. While fans of MetaMask wait for its governance token airdrop, scammers frequently advertise fraudulent airdrops of MASK and MM currencies.
MetaMask Faced Backlash on Privacy Policy
TheCoinRepublic reported earlier that the company behind software wallet MetaMask, Consensys ran into trouble after recently updating their privacy policy.
The privacy policy noted that the platform would be now collecting the Ethereum wallets’ IP and wallet addresses. This would be applicable on every transaction over the platform. Moreover, financial, marketing and platform usage information like information were also said to be tracked along with others.
CEO Joseph Lubin provided more clarifications and stated that the adjustments were transitory. Users of Infura would be subject to the “data collation,” according to Lubin. This would not apply to users that have their own Ethereum nodes or independent third-party RPC providers. These RPC service providers could be Alchemy, Moralis, or Quicknode.
On Ethereum, Consensys uses Infura as its infrastructure platform. As the default supplier of Remote Procedure Call (RPC) for the cryptocurrency wallet platform MetaMask, it is essential. According to the privacy statement, when using Infura as the default MetaMask RPC provider, users’ IP addresses and Ethereum wallet addresses will be gathered.
