Has the Clash Ended?
After a meeting with CEO Tim Cook at Apple’s headquarters, Elon Musk now said that the luxury tech company was not planning to remove Twitter from the App store.
As per media reports, Elon Musk said that Apple has threatened to “withhold” the social media platform from the iOS App Store for undisclosed reasons.
Musk said that Apple “mostly stopped advertising” on the platform. Also, Twitter lost 50% of major advertisers recurring a total loss of $750 million in a master of weeks after the deal closed by Elon Musk.
As per the Media Matters for America reports, “In recent weeks, 50 of the top 100 advertisers have either announced or seemingly stopped advertising on Twitter,” they added, “These advertisers have accounted for nearly $2 billion in spending on the platform since 2020, and over $750 million in advertising in 2022 alone.”
On October 27th, Elon Musk acquired the micro-blogging site for $44 billion. A few days later, he fired the CEO Parag Agrawal; the CFO Ned Segal, and other top executives. After a couple of weeks, he fired 3,700 employees (accounting for half of the workforce), after giving an ultimatum of doing “hardcore” work to fulfill his long-term vision for the microblogging social media platform.
As per Bloomberg, Apple has been spending an estimated over $100 million annually on Twitter. Also, the tech giant has spent almost $48 million on advertisements on the platform in just the first quarter of 2022.
“Twitter not in the App Store anymore?
According to CNBC, Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis said in a press conference- “You also hear reports Apple is threatening to remove Twitter from the App Store because Elon Musk is actually opening it up for free speech, and is restoring a lot of accounts that were unfairly and illegitimately suspended for putting out accurate information about Covid.”
Musk tweeted a clarification whether Twitter would be removed from Apple-
“Good conversation. Among other things, we resolved the misunderstanding about Twitter potentially being removed from the App Store. Tim was clear that Apple never considered doing so.”
Previously, Musk had criticized Apple for App Store fees for in-app purchases, which he called “a hidden 30% tax on the internet.” The Tesla and SpaceX founder discussed his plan of “mass unbanning” of suspended accounts, including the ban of former United States President Donald Trump’s Twitter account by the Head of legal and policy, Vijaya Gadde.
