Barclays Share Price Continues Lethargic Moves Post-Earnings

The leading global financial services provider company, Barclays PLC (LSE: BARC) is about to close its ex-dividend date today i.e. August 10, 2023. The company is among those who pay dividends on the half-yearly basis. Despite the update, Barclays share price remained neutral. The recently posted earnings affected the up move and changed the course for BARC stock price.

Barclays posted the earnings for the second quarter that ended in June 2023. The earnings released in July-end seemed “modestly disappointing” to the analysts. This could be because of multiple reasons including subsequent drop in revenue and weakening of factors that kept the revenues higher.

The financial firm posted a revenue of £6.3 Billion ($7.87 Billion), which fell over 6% from the previous quarter. The net income for the British banking firm for Q2 2023 was £1.3 Billion ($1.68 Billion). Though the income also fell year-over-year from £1.78 Billion, it performed better than expected despite the slowdown in investment banking.

In operating expenses, Barclays reported £3.92 Billion ($4.91 Billion) marking an increase of over 6% in a year. The company currently sits on assets worth £1,549.7 Billion ($1,962.2 Billion) by June 2023, marking a rise of over 2% since 2022.

The Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1), a metric to check for bank solvency, for Barclays, was 13.8%.

Barclays to Pay £2.70 in Dividends and £750M Shares Buyback

The company is likely to pay a dividend by mid-September, 2023. The amount payable to the shareholders per share would be £2.70.

Since dividends are paid from a share of a company’s earnings, more amount suggests the good profitability of the company.

Barclays earnings saw an increase of 60% per year during the last five years while the dividend growth in the last decade remained around 1.7% per year, according to Simply Wall Street.

In addition, the company announced to purchase back the BARC shares worth £750 Million.

Barclays Share Price Movement

Prior to the earnings, Barclays share price was in uptrend and rose over 12% within two weeks. After stalling at around £163 for about a week, BARC’s stock price tumbled post-earnings release. It has declined more than 10% since then.

Currently, Barclays share price is trading at £148 following a slight drop of 0.5% in the last intraday session.

The current price of BARC stock at press time is acting as immediate support as it is consolidating between the £148 to £164 price range. It is below the 50-day and 200-day exponential moving average (EMA). If the downfall continues, Barcalays share price could go down as strong support at its yearly low of £130.
