Now users of the metaverse game Fortnite are presented with building blocks, literally. In their official announcement, Fortnite welcomed LEGO, a toy manufacturing company, to their ecosystem. Gaming publication Eurogamer writes that “Lego Fortnite feels like Minecraft for the metaverse era.” Which isn’t wrong given that its gameplay resonates with the sandbox game.

A Block-Buster Collaboration

LEGO Fortnite is available to play on all the platforms compatible with the battle royale game, including PC, PlayStation, Android, and more. Additionally, it has cloud gaming support, enabling users to access it through devices supporting internet connectivity.

The introduction reads, “You’ve fallen into a new world… in LEGO form? The nature around you seems familiar, but under the surface it’s made of LEGO bricks! Harvest LEGO resources to create your own builds, and create villages for you and your friends to live it up. The LEGO life takes courage — face enemies and the elements in your quest of construction. Food and swords will come in handy!”

Fortnite was released in 2017 by Epic Games. Since then the game has become one of the most popular titles in the gaming industry. According to SuperData Research, an analysis firm, it generated $2.4 Billion in 2018. In the same year, a streaming event where notable personalities like Drake, Kim Dotcom, Travis Scott, and more played the game, broke viewership records.

Additionally, the game has served as a digital stadium for concerts. Singer Travis Scott garnered over 45 Million views in 2020. More concerts from celebrities like Ariana Grande and Marshmello attracted 27 Million and 12.7 Million respectively. Similar events on Roblox, another metaverse game, have done the same for many acclaimed artists.

The Denmark-based company is among the largest toy makers in the world alongside organizations like Bandai Namco and Hasbro. Last year, it generated $7.5 Billion in revenue. Data shows that 90 percent of consumers based in the United States are aware of LEGO.

Furthermore, The Lego Group, the brand’s parent organization, built several amusement parks globally under an umbrella term Legoland. In one of their articles, news agency The New York Times wrote that “Lego Helps Kids of All Ages Unlock Their Creativity.” Even adults have reported reduction in anxiety and stress while playing the block building game.

Virtual worlds like Roblox and Fortnite are currently dominating the metaverse sector. The data also shows there are only 400 Million users in the metaverse. However, both the games collectively have a monthly active user base of over 400 Million. The former data isn’t complete which lands us to the safety to say that the metaverse crowd is definitely bigger than it seems.

Technological developments like photorealism, virtual reality, in-game physics are rendering the metaverse more immersive. However, there still remains a need for better infrastructure to onboard more people in digital worlds.
