The mystery of Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, has resurfaced in crypto news as Coinbase director Conor Grogan speculated that Kraken and its founder, Jesse Powell, might have access to Satoshi’s real identity .
The claim follows new blockchain data revealing a link between an old Satoshi-linked wallet and a centralized exchange.
On Feb 4, blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence indexed approximately 22,000 wallets believed to belong to Nakamoto.
Among these addresses, Grogan identified one that had interacted with a now-defunct Canadian exchange, CaVirtEx.
Kraken acquired CaVirtEx in 2016, raising questions about whether the exchange still holds relevant customer data.
Satoshi Nakamoto’s First On-Chain Link to an Exchange
Grogan’s findings suggest that a Satoshi-linked wallet is tied to a withdrawal address registered at CaVirtEx.
If correct, this would be the first documented on-chain connection between Nakamoto’s Bitcoin holdings and a centralized exchange.
Kraken’s acquisition of CaVirtEx may mean that Powell and his team have retained historical data that could potentially uncover Nakamoto’s identity. However, there is no public evidence confirming that Kraken still possesses such records.
“My advice to him would be to delete the data,” Grogan stated in an X (formerly Twitter) thread, highlighting the potential ramifications of uncovering Bitcoin’s elusive founder.
Arkham’s report uses the controversial Patoshi Pattern, a mining fingerprint linked to early Bitcoin activity, to trace wallets associated with Satoshi.
Grogan acknowledged Pantoshi pattern flaws but praised Arkham’s findings as “new evidence about Bitcoin’s early activity.”
One of the identified Satoshi-linked wallets also connects to an active Bitcoin whale holding approximately $3 billion worth of BTC at current prices.
Whether this whale has any direct link to Nakamoto remains unclear.
Crypto Community’s Stance on Satoshi’s Identity in Crypto News
Since Bitcoin’s launch in 2009, Nakamoto’s identity has been a hot topic in crypto news, with various individuals, including Craig Wright, claiming to be Satoshi, though these assertions have been largely dismissed by the crypto community.
Many industry veterans argue that Bitcoin functions best without a known creator. A public Satoshi could face legal scrutiny or influence market dynamics, potentially disrupting Bitcoin’s decentralized ethos.
While the latest findings suggest Kraken may hold valuable historical data, there is no certainty that Nakamoto’s true identity will ever be revealed. For now, the mystery remains, fueling speculation within the crypto world.
Kraken responded to Grogan’s post with, “We are all Satoshi,” to which Grogan replied, “It’s official then!”
The CaVirtEx link adds fuel to crypto’s longest-running mystery. Yet without concrete evidence, Satoshi’s identity remains speculative. Arkham’s indexing and Grogan’s analysis offer fresh leads but no smoking gun.
