Ethereum Nears $1,800 Breakdown as $1,500 Looms

Key Insights

  • Ethereum hovered above a critical multi-week support zone.
  • Derivatives data showed heavy liquidation risk below spot.
  • Technical pattern projected deeper downside if support failed.

Ethereum’s rally stalled late Monday as sellers defended the psychological $2,000 threshold. The asset drifted lower toward $1,800 after failing to sustain momentum, reflecting persistent overhead supply. Traders shifted focus to whether bulls could defend the newly established support cluster.

The Ethereum price remained under pressure as macro caution and fading risk appetite limited upside continuation. While the broader crypto market steadied, Ether lagged Bitcoin and struggled to reclaim higher resistance bands. That divergence placed technical structure and on-chain positioning at the center of short-term expectations.

Immediate Market Reaction And Liquidity Positioning

CoinGlass data showed short liquidations exceeding $120 million over two sessions, clearing aggressive bearish leverage. That flush reduced upward squeeze potential and exposed a liquidity pocket beneath the prevailing spot range. The same dataset mapped roughly $624 million in cumulative long liquidation exposure stacked below key support, creating vulnerability if sellers forced a breakdown.

CryptoQuant analyst Maartunn observed approximately 67,000 ETH resting just below the current trading band, valued at nearly $130 million at prevailing prices. That concentration reinforced the importance of the lower boundary as a defensive zone. If price pierced through that cluster, cascading long liquidations could accelerate volatility.

Exchange flows, however, did not signal panic distribution. Net transfers remained relatively contained compared with prior capitulation phases. This moderation suggested positioning stress existed primarily in derivatives rather than spot markets.

Ethereum Triangle Structure Points Toward Sub-$1,500 Risk

Daily chart structure showed a symmetrical triangle compressing price action for several weeks. The lower trend line aligned with the $1,800–$1,900 support corridor, forming a technical inflection zone. Failure to hold that band would validate a measured move derived from the pattern’s height.

Technicians calculated the downside projection near $1,400, implying a potential decline of about 28% from recent trading levels. The setup gained relevance because price recently rejected the upper boundary before sliding back toward support. That rejection confirmed sellers still controlled rallies.

Historical price behavior reinforced the cautionary stance. During prior bear cycles in 2018 and 2022, breakdowns from similar compression patterns extended until long-term support bands attracted structural demand. Traders therefore, monitored the lower boundary closely for confirmation rather than anticipation.

On-Chain Metrics Signal Room For Further Drawdown

CryptoQuant data showed Ethereum Market Value to Realized Value extreme deviation bands trending above current spot levels. The metric suggested unrealized profits had not yet reached historically distressed territory. In earlier downturns, price typically bottomed below the lowest deviation band before durable reversals formed.

Current band positioning implied potential downside toward roughly $1,650 before extreme undervaluation metrics triggered broader accumulation. That reading aligned partially with the triangle’s measured objective, strengthening the confluence case. Still, valuation models do not dictate timing; they frame probability.

Cost-basis distribution heatmaps also revealed heavy acquisition activity around the lower support cluster during the past month. Roughly 1.23 million ETH changed hands near an average cost of $1,890 over that window, forming a dense ownership block. If holders defended that basis aggressively, supply absorption could slow the descent. Conversely, breach of that zone could flip recent buyers into loss, increasing sell pressure.

Broader sentiment remained cautious. Funding rates moderated across major exchanges after earlier volatility, indicating that leverage appetite had cooled. That shift occurred because traders absorbed recent liquidations and reduced directional conviction.

Price action now hinges on whether buyers stabilize the lower boundary of the multi-week compression structure. A confirmed daily close below that area would expose the projected objective and test the resilience of derivative positioning. If support persists, short-term consolidation may continue until fresh catalysts emerge.
