NYSE Develops Blockchain Platform for Tokenized Securities

Key Insights:

  • NYSE is developing an on-chain platform to settle tokenized securities more efficiently.
  • Lynn Martin said blockchain could become part of the future financial market infrastructure.
  • NYSE is exploring tokenization while maintaining investor safeguards and market stability.

Tokenized stocks are moving closer to Wall Street infrastructure as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) develops an on-chain settlement platform for tokenized securities.

NYSE President Lynn Martin disclosed the plan while speaking at a seminar at South Korea’s National Assembly in Seoul. She said the exchange is examining how blockchain technology can support future financial market infrastructure.

Martin made the remarks during a seminar titled “Measures to Advance South Korea’s Capital Market and Enhance Global Competitiveness.” Her speech focused on market infrastructure, investor confidence, technology, and the changing relationship between traditional finance and decentralized finance.

NYSE Builds On-Chain Settlement Platform

The NYSE is developing a platform designed to support the on-chain settlement of tokenized securities. NYSE President Martin said the exchange participated in the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation’s tokenization pilot last July.

She added that NYSE will continue examining how the technology can become part of future financial market infrastructure.

The project could provide Tokenized securities with a settlement framework integrated with established exchange infrastructure. However, Martin did not provide details about the platform’s launch date, technical design, supported assets, or blockchain network.

Instead, she pointed out the need for responsible implementation and for infrastructure, rules, and safeguards. Martin described technology as part of a broader shift affecting how markets operate and how capital reaches companies and projects.

Tokenized Securities Enter Traditional Market Infrastructure

Martin said NYSE views tokenization and on-chain payments as examples of new market infrastructure. She also described the current period as a shift from traditional finance to decentralized finance.

According to her speech, the exchange wants to examine new technologies while retaining current market safeguards.

The NYSE has also focused on handling periods of intense market activity. Martin cited March 20, when 3.6 billion shares traded during the exchange’s closing auction. Nominal trading volume reached $231 billion on the same day.

She attributed the exchange’s ability to handle such activity to continued investment in technology. Martin also highlighted Designated Market Makers, who combine technology with human judgment during opening and closing auctions.

NYSE-listed companies, she said, recorded 40% lower volatility and 60% narrower spreads across sectors. These figures formed part of her discussion about investor protection, liquidity, price discovery, and risk management.

The blockchain program comes alongside NYSE’s planned expansion of trading hours. Martin said the exchange received SEC approval to extend trading while maintaining existing market safeguards. NYSE plans to begin a 23-hour, five-day trading schedule in December.

Martin compared the change with South Korea’s won-dollar foreign exchange market. Korea moved to 24-hour trading on July 6. She said both markets have prepared their systems to accommodate longer operating hours.

Martin also said technology is changing how markets understand risk, price liquidity, and connect capital with businesses. She said NYSE intends to continue examining blockchain applications for financial infrastructure.
