When spending crypto abroad, a card’s foreign exchange fee can look small until it applies to every hotel bill, restaurant payment, and shopping purchase during a trip. Spend the equivalent of $500 a month outside the card’s default currency, and a 1% charge could add $60 in costs over a year.
A broader picture further reveals FX is not necessarily the full cost. Some crypto spending cards also charge for purchases or converting the balance used to pay.
In this comparison, we look at four crypto cards: RedotPay standard USD, KAST Standard K Card, UPay at Regular status, and ether.fi Cash Core.
How We Compared the Spending Costs
To understand how much a foreign purchase would cost, we gathered the latest official fee documentation as of October 2026 from each of these platforms.
Our user example for standardization purposes spends $500 equivalent monthly in a non-USD currency, totaling $6,000 annually. Another assumption made is that individual purchases are at least $25 while users have existing stablecoin or relevant balances.
Also worth adding that the combined charges illustrate the stated percentages applied to the same purchase principal rather than live exchange-rate quotes. Issuance, delivery, subscriptions, funding-route costs, and ATM use are separate. Cashback is excluded from the calculations.
The comparison also doesn’t include blockchain transfer costs and merchant surcharges.
What a foreign purchase costs
| Cost | RedotPay standard USD | KAST Standard K Card | UPay (Regular) | ether.fi Cash Core |
| FX fee | 1.2% | 0.5–1.75%, depending on program and location | 0% | 0.5% Core margin above the settlement exchange rate |
| Purchase/conversion fee | 1% crypto conversion | 0% transaction fee; supported stablecoins convert to USD at 1:1 with zero spread | 2% at Regular; qualifying VIP rates fall to 1% at VIP 5–9 | Not specified |
| Charges per $100-equivalent foreign purchase | Approximately $2.20 | $0.50-$1.75 | $2 | $0.50 Core margin; full cost unpriced |
| Charges on $6,000 of annual foreign purchases | Approximately $132 | $30-$105 | $120 | $30 Core margin; full cost not established |
How much spending $500 a month adds up to
As the comparison reveals, RedotPay standard’s illustrative combined rate is 2.2%, with FX accounting for 1.2% while crypto conversion makes up 1%. Together, these two costs total $11 in charges on $500 of monthly foreign spending (around $132 annually).
KAST’s Standard, on the other hand, totals around $2.50-$8.75 monthly as per the published fee range; this translates to around $30-$105 annually, although it’s worth adding that the applicable FX rate depends on residence, transaction country, and card program.
UPay charges no FX fee. Its Regular purchase fee of 2% adds $10 monthly, or $120 annually, under the comparison’s stated assumptions. Higher VIP tiers lower the rate to as little as 1%.
ether.fi applies zero FX markup to eligible purchases charged in EUR under its beta program. For currencies outside USD and EUR, its current FX guidance lists a 0.5% Core margin above the underlying settlement exchange rate, without specifying a fixed base percentage. The margin adds $30 on $6,000 of annual purchases, but this is not a complete FX-cost estimate.
Additional costs that could change the math
The FX and conversion fees are the baseline, but not the only costs abroad spending users should evaluate.
Smaller purchases, for instance, might attract additional charges; this is the case for KAST, which adds $0.10 to each non-USD purchase that’s below $25. Fifty transactions of around $10 each could therefore add $5 monthly or $60 annually, pushing the annual charges in our model example to between $90-$165 annually.
There are also potential non-recurring costs associated with card issuance and delivery for physical ones.
RedotPay standard costs $10 for a virtual card or $100 for a physical card. KAST includes two Standard virtual cards; a regional $2 issuance fee may apply; physical card costs $0 plus $40 delivery.
UPay also features a one-time 10 USDT card issuance fee, with no subscription requirement. ether.fi Core includes one virtual card, with a $10 fee in some regions.
Sign-up process and how long it takes
Apart from the spending costs, it’s also worth comparing how much it takes to get started on any of the featured crypto cards given the uncertainty with operating abroad. This section goes a step further to compare the registration requirements, KYC requirements, cost to use, and how long the approval process for each takes.

Which crypto card fits spending abroad?
Going by the findings in this comparison, the best crypto card to use for spending abroad depends on one’s purchase patterns.
KAST Standard has the lower published purchase charge range in our main scenario, although frequent payments below $25 can narrow that advantage. RedotPay standard combines FX and crypto conversion charges, while ether.fi’s euro program deserves separate consideration for travelers paying in EUR.
UPay combines zero FX with a 2% Regular purchase fee and no subscription. Its modeled annual purchase charges are $120 before issuance and other applicable costs.
Across all four providers, the useful comparison starts with the currencies you spend in and your typical purchase sizes. Adding issuance, funding, and any cash-withdrawal costs gives a clearer picture than the FX rate alone.
