Stablecoins are Emerging as the Go-to Solution for Agentic Payments

The speed at which artificial intelligence is progressing is absolutely astounding. Machine learning models are moving much faster than anyone could have anticipated. They are getting smarter by the day, which is both exciting and distressing. It’s like an incredibly powerful and unpredictable technology is shaping our world in real time.

Just a few years ago, we considered it a futuristic concept that was eons away from materializing into something concrete. Today, it has become so widespread that it touches nearly every industry and aspect of daily life.

Of course, there are still plenty of things that AI can’t do (yet). Even the most advanced programs struggle with common sense reasoning. They have serious problem-solving limitations when they face unprecedented issues. Those programs certainly cannot substitute human thinking in situations involving creativity, intuition, emotional intelligence, or moral values. That’s because they lack these components. So, this is not exactly the AI-taking-over-the-world scenario so many fear.

How Agentic Payments are Driving AI Adoption of Stablecoins

Nevertheless, the activities and areas that AI can take over keep expanding. They are going well beyond answering queries and generating content. Payments represent one of the latest frontiers the technology has crossed.

Agentic payments are transactions that AI software initiates and executes autonomously on users’ behalf. They represent one of the most interesting areas of AI development. However, the question that most often arises is not whether we should let some programs handle transactions. It is: how they are going to handle transactions since using conventional banking rails isn’t an option.

The current limitations have pushed agentic payment towards crypto. Stablecoins are becoming the preferred medium of exchange for settling transactions. So, now those who wanted to know how to buy USDC might also want to find out how these coins can fuel the agentic payment era.

Why traditional payments and AI agents aren’t a good match

While many sectors have flung the doors wide open to AI, the situation is a tad more complicated in finance, where AI agents face serious hurdles due to the regulatory frameworks that govern this space. The banking system that we all know and use is built around human-centric verifications. All banks worldwide require a valid human ID and a verifiable address from a person they can hold liable, or legal registration documents and tax identifiers for companies, to open an account. Anti-money laundering regulations require that, and that’s something AI agents cannot provide.

Also, even if an agent could theoretically bypass KYC checks, CAPTCHAs and two- or multi-factor authentication would stop it. These security measures require users to provide biometric data, such as fingerprints, facial recognition, or iris scans, to grant access. That’s also an issue AI can’t solve since it doesn’t have a human body. Basically, AI agents can’t use conventional payment rails because they’re neither a person nor a company, and never will be.

Even if developers somehow resolve all these verification issues, they must still address technical incongruities. Payment providers built the entire infrastructure to serve human users. Most financial institutions function on standard business hours, being typically open Monday through Friday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. ACH transfers usually take one to three business days to complete, while cross-border wire transfers can take up to five days to process. AI agents work round-the-clock, and these restrictive schedules would seriously limit their capabilities.

The stablecoin solution

Crypto rails don’t have any of the obstacles that traditional financial systems pose. All it takes to complete crypto transactions is setting up a dedicated wallet. It requires only a set of public and private keys to send and receive funds. There’s nothing stopping AI agents from creating as many wallets as they want, in which they can hold their USDC or other digital currencies and use them for transactions without impediments. Those who have the keys associated with the wallets have access to the funds and can use them as they please, whether they are humans or bots.

The blockchain architecture that underpins crypto removes the need for intermediaries and third-party authorization. The only thing that matters is wallet ownership, which isn’t dependent on humans. So, bureaucratic requirements aren’t blocking AI agents.

Why Stablecoins Suit AI Agents but Cannot Power Autonomous Payments Alone

Why exactly are stablecoins the best option out of all cryptocurrencies? Well, it all comes down to volatility, or lack thereof. Digital currencies are notorious for being extremely price-volatile, and AI agents need an instrument that’s both accessible and stable. Stablecoins seem to be the only ones that fit this description because they are pegged to another asset by design. This means that they are nowhere near as volatile as their counterparts, so agents can transact with them knowing that unexpected price swings won’t mess up calculations.

On top of that, stablecoins like USDC are also famous for their near-instant settlement times and low fees. The crypto market is open 24/7, making it a perfect match for AI agents on all fronts. Stablecoins tied to the US dollar are considered the most reliable ones for these types of transactions.

However, it has to be said that stablecoins do not represent a complete solution for agentic payments. Despite their utility, they cannot power the entire autonomous economy on their own because their reach is limited. Just think about how many merchants and companies accept payments in stablecoins. Even if they are the most accessible and sensible payment option for AI agents, as long as they are not a mainstream instrument, they can only help so much.

The Road Ahead for Agentic Payments

Agentic payments need more than stablecoins. They need access to a variety of payment rails, both conventional and blockchain-based, so agents can decide which one makes more sense on a case-by-case basis. While AI-powered payments, especially in the commerce space, are expected to become a daily reality in the not-so-distant future, there are still many technicalities that need to be addressed, and payment rails are just one of them.
