Crypto Market Braces for Volatility Ahead of US FOMC Minutes

Key Insights:

  • The crypto market could turn volatile as investors await the FOMC minutes.
  • Traders price a 68% chance of a Fed rate hike by year-end.
  • Hawkish Fed signals could lift bond yields and pressure the crypto market.

The crypto market faces potential volatility as investors await minutes from the Federal Reserve’s July policy meeting. The record will show how widely officials supported higher rates after three policymakers backed a 25-basis-point increase.

Meanwhile, crypto prices trade modestly higher as traders assess the September and year-end interest-rate outlooks.

Crypto Market Awaits US FOMC Minutes

The US FOMC kept the federal funds rate within the 3.5% to 3.75% range in July. However, three regional Fed presidents voted to increase rates by 25 basis points.

Lorie Logan, Beth Hammack, and Neel Kashkari favored the proposed increase. Their votes showed a growing divide over the right policy stance.

Consequently, investors will be watching for any signs of support for higher rates from other members of the committee. The minutes could also reveal whether additional policymakers showed willingness to accept an increase.

However, several economic releases have changed the policy backdrop since July. Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index data showed moderating inflation pressures.

Meanwhile, the latest employment report showed that the economy lost 23,000 jobs in July. The report also included notable downward revisions to employment figures from previous months.

Softer Data Changes the Rate Outlook

Following those releases, markets now assign a 34% probability to a September rate hike. That figure has fallen from approximately 60% three weeks earlier.

Nevertheless, traders price a 68% probability of another increase by the end of the year. The two figures cover different policy periods, with September representing the nearer decision.

Citi expects the minutes to confirm divisions within the committee, including the three votes supporting higher rates. However, the bank says the discussion predates the recent softer economic data.

According to Citi, those later releases have shifted the policy narrative in a more dovish direction. Therefore, the July discussions may provide limited guidance on the Fed’s current position.

Meanwhile, Bank of America also considers the minutes dated after the softer jobs and inflation figures. The bank says those reports have substantially reduced market pricing for rate increases.

Nevertheless, Bank of America will monitor whether other participants wanted a hike or could have supported one. It will also examine the committee’s requirements for a September move, although it expects few specific details.

Crypto Prices Frame Two Fed Scenarios

Against this policy backdrop, the crypto market records broad daily gains before the minutes. Bitcoin trades at $65,344.64 after gaining 1.3% over 24 hours and 1.4% weekly.

Ethereum rises 1.9% daily to $1,935.22, although it slips 0.2% during the latest hour. Meanwhile, Solana leads the listed non-stablecoin assets with a 3% increase to $78.50.

Elsewhere, XRP gains 2% to $1.02, while BNB advances 0.6% to $605.13. However, BNB trades 1.4% lower weekly, while TRON falls 1.1% to approximately $0.3321.

A hawkish account showing wider support for rate increases could lift bond yields and pressure the crypto market. That scenario would strengthen the case for another increase after July’s three dissents.

Conversely, limited support beyond the three officials would support the case for unchanged rates in September. Softer inflation and labor data also align with that scenario.

However, the price levels discussed in this article are based on the market data and represent potential scenarios rather than guaranteed outcomes. Cryptocurrency prices may move substantially in either direction.

This article is not intended as financial advice, and readers should conduct independent research and seek professional guidance if needed before investing.

Notably, the minutes will report the July discussions rather than announce another policy decision. Crypto prices will therefore respond to the Fed’s recorded debate and the disclosed extent of support for higher rates.
