MARA Holdings stock is in focus after the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved Cboe’s plan for binary options tied to company performance metrics. The approved framework includes measures reported by Coinbase, Robinhood, and MARA.
For MARA, contracts may reference Bitcoin production, purchases, total holdings, blocks won, and energized hash rate. The decision clears Cboe’s exchange rule change, although trading has not started. The MARA stock price closed at $8.23 on October 14, down 9.66% for the session.
MARA Holdings Stock Joins New Cboe KPI Options Framework
The US SEC approved Cboe’s amended proposal on October 13. The products are cash-settled, European-style standardized options tied to defined key performance indicators.
Unlike traditional stock options, these contracts do not depend directly on the share price. Instead, their outcome depends on whether a reported company metric meets the contract condition.
For MARA Holdings stock, the eligible metrics include Bitcoin produced and Bitcoin purchased. Other measures include total BTC holdings, blocks won, and energized hashrate. Cboe’s structure also covers corporate data from Coinbase and Robinhood.
Coinbase metrics include revenue, transaction revenue, and diluted earnings per share. Robinhood measures include net revenue, funded customers, and Gold subscribers.
MARA Stock Price Falls as SEC Opens New Performance Market
The regulatory news came during a weak stretch for MARA stock price. MARA Holdings stock price closed at $9.11 the day before and at $9.44 on October 12, TradingView data showed. That decline has kept the stock under pressure despite the new derivatives framework, and it is currently hovering near $8.23.

SEC approval does not directly change the valuation of MARA Holdings stock. Instead, it introduces another regulated product linked to the company’s operating results.
That distinction matters for miners. MARA’s production and hashrate figures can move differently from Bitcoin’s market price. The KPI contracts therefore reference company execution rather than only broader moves in the crypto market.
SEC Rules Set Limits Around Cboe Binary Options
SEC Chairman Paul Atkins said the approved contracts will operate under existing securities exchange protections. Those rules cover customer accounts, margin, trading halts, and market-maker obligations.
The order applies only to the specific securities options approved under Cboe’s framework. Atkins said it does not prevent the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) from overseeing differently structured products.
The SEC described the products as National Market System securities. They will settle in cash and can be exercised only at expiration.
The agency approved Cboe’s proposal on an accelerated basis after an amended filing. That amendment added details covering settlement, trading halts, and position limits.
MARA Holdings Stock Contracts Still Await Full Launch
Cboe announced the planned KPI rollout in late September. The initial proposal covered company-specific metrics for 23 public companies and targeted an October launch, pending regulatory approval.
However, the broader rollout still depends on related clearing arrangements. As of October 15, no confirmed trading date had been announced.
The final contract lineup may also change before launch. That leaves the exact selection of opening-day metrics subject to Cboe’s final product schedule.
For MARA Holdings stock, attention centers on Bitcoin production and energized hash rate. Both figures provide measurable snapshots of MARA’s mining operations without relying solely on movements in the MARA stock price.
